One of London’s most intriguing properties for sale used to be a famous recording studio where David Bowie, Tina Turner and other mega-stars recorded hit songs years ago.

Previously the site of a shell-casing factory during the First World War, and a dairy until the 1950s, it was later converted into Mayfair Recording Studios.

The studios closed in 2008. The mansion underwent a complete overhaul to become Eglon House — an architectural homage to the Maison de Verre, meaning House of Glass, in Paris. The five-bedroom home is now on the market for a cool £24 million.

Stephen Lindsay, head of Savills North London, said: “Much like the Maison de Verre [built in 1932] was a milestone in architectural history, so too is Eglon House a milestone for London’s property market. Ten years in the making, the developer has created a flexible home, akin to a piece of art.”

Eglon House’s two buildings are interconnected by an internal staircase, with plentiful office and living space, plus a study on the top floors. Convertible spaces allow the house to be used as a home office. The muse of the over 13,500-square-foot home is truly unmistakable. According to the estate agent, the original moulds for the glass blocks from the famous House of Glass were sourced and recast to create the façade of Eglon House; original furniture was found and light fittings recreated; the blue carpet in the master bedroom is the exact shade of the carpet in the maison’s bedroom; and 1930s construction methods were used to shape the concrete ceilings.

That said, the property is not void of original and modern elements. There is a lift to all floors, a cinema room, and a state-of-the-art indoor swimming pool.

Lindsay said: “An exceptional property such as Eglon House commands interest from any high-net-worth individual considering purchasing a London home. The successful buyer will no doubt be globally nomadic with multiple homes in the US and elsewhere in Europe, spending time in key cities around the world.”
