A $955 million contract to renew Sydney’s Central Station has been given to engineering firm Laing O’Rourke.

The upgrade is part of the New South Wales Government’s $20 billion Sydney Metro project, which includes a stand-alone railway and 31 new stations.

Central Station will receive a new underground concourse known as Central Walk, along with new Sydney Metro platforms.

Laing O’Rourke managing director Cathal O’Rourke told The Australian that the company was an ideal choice for the project, following on from its successful $100 million upgrade of Wynyard Station.

Architectural firm Woods Bagot and London-based John McAslan + Partners will also contribute to the project.

Work will begin immediately, with the Central Walk expected to be open to commuters by 2022, and services to the new Metro platforms to start in 2024.
