Crown Group has appointed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma to design its new 19-storey tower in Sydney’s Waterloo, part of a five-building development in the Green Square urban renewal precinct.

Kuma’s winning design depicted a plant-filled green exterior and was submitted in partnership with Australian architecture firm Koichi Takada Architects. The architect recently designed the 2020 Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, along with the V & A museum in Dundee.

Kuma will design the tallest of the five buildings, comprising 384 apartments and a mix of restaurants, cafes and shops, which will sit alongside Crown Group’s 331-apartment development which is due for completion in 2020.

Three remaining buildings will be designed by Koichi Takada Architects, and another by Silvester Fuller.
