Crown Group Chairman and Group CEO Iwan Sunito has brought together two Japanese superstar architects to ensure that Mastery by Crown Group further stretches the boundaries of modern design that he was already pushing with Waterfall by Crown Group in Waterloo and Infinity by Crown Group in nearby Green Square.

Tokyo-based legend and Dezeen favourite, Kengo Kuma, has collaborated with white-hot, Tokyo-born but Sydney-based architect Koichi Takada, on the 19-storey Building C (pictured below), the jewel in the crown of Mastery.

Kengo has conceived a unique, timber-clad ‘stacked forest’ exterior to revolutionise Waterloo’s skyline, topped with a spectacular, cantilevered rooftop pool (pictured below), gym, spa, resident’s lounge and even a mini-cinema, delivering perhaps the finest facilities of any Sydney apartment development to date, with striking interiors by Takada.

The urban forest is central to the theme of this inspired building, designed to connect inner-city residents to nature, and bring to life one of Kengo Kuma’s central beliefs: “It is always in dialogue with humans; but good architecture does not attempt to fix nature—instead, it moves with nature, always continuing the dialogue.”

Three further buildings showcase the prolific talents of Koichi Takada Architects, while the fifth and final residential tower is the work of established local firm Sylvester Fuller, adding a uniquely local perspective to the development.

Koichi shares Iwan’s vision to “transform Waterloo from a characterless industrial suburb into a green urban oasis with a vibrant street culture and resort-style living for happy and healthy residents in organically-designed apartments that make the most of the area’s unique inner Sydney location.”

Mastery by Crown Group is the latest in Crown Group’s ever-expanding Sydney portfolio of residential design masterpieces, now enhanced by the addition of SKYE Hotel Suites in Paramatta and the CBD while looking at new development sites in both Brisbane and Melbourne. Iwan has pioneered the growing trend of using of world-class architects in Australia for medium to large-scale residential and mixed-use developments, driven by his almost obsessive drive for architectural innovation and perfection, matched with a passionate belief in the potential for suburbs like Waterloo to become global design hubs.

“We have a riveting vision for this inner-city area to further enrich its appeal as a lifestyle destination. At the core of this transformation is the aim to establish and foster a new community in Waterloo, with a focus on resort-style living and a deep connection to nature,” says Sunito.

Iwan continues, “to achieve this monumental vision, we collaborated with a personal hero of mine, revered Japanese master Kengo Kuma on his first residential project here - an immense honour for all at Crown Group. We are also delighted to again be working with genius local architect Koichi Takada, our collaborator on a range of successful projects.”

Mastery by Crown Group will be unveiled at a VIP event on Thursday, October 18th at the Royal Hall of Industries, where their star architects will rub shoulders with Sydney’s design cognoscenti, entertained by the chart-topping tunes of rising star Dami Im.

With construction scheduled for completion in 2021, apartment sales for Mastery will begin on 17 November with a display centre located at 30-36 O’Dea Avenue, Waterloo.
