by Julia Hughes Photos by The Agency There are many houses in Beverly Hills, but only one Beverly House. Sprawling over 50,000 square feet, with over 30 bedrooms, near-Olympic size swimming pool and two movie theatres, the 1920s Spanish Mission style compound with the trademark name The Beverly House is seeped in history and old world Hollywood glamour. On the market for the first time in ten years, current owner attorney-businessman Leonard M. Ross has set price expectations high at US$195 million " $30 million more than the last listing price in 2008. 001_beverlyhouse_001_low But the price, equal to the US record set by a mansion in Florida, reflects not only the vast size and proportions of the estate but also those who've touched its many colonnades. Designed by Gordon Kaufmann, the architect behind the Hoover Dam, the house was owned by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and his mistress, actress Marion Davies. In the 1960s the compound served as Presidential Election Headquarters for John F. Kennedy, and was also where he and Jacqueline Kennedy spent their honeymoon. Movie fans will recognise the house faà §ade and main swimming pool from starring roles in The Godfather and The Bodyguard. Aside from celebrity pedigree, what else does The Beverly House offer? 003_beverlyhouse_003_low Despite its prime location, only three blocks from Sunset Boulevard and the Beverly Hills Hotel, The Beverly House offers extreme privacy and security with four gates and a security cottage. Entertainers delight doesn't even come close to describing the dining and leisure features of the house including a commercial grade kitchen, terraces that hold 400 or more guests for a seated dinner, and grounds with room for over 1,000 people. Also contained in the H-shaped estate are a two-story library; formal living room with a 22-foot-high, hand-painted, arched ceiling; state-of-the-art spa; billiards room; and a grand upstairs hallway more than 102 feet long. 004_beverlyhouse_004_low The long private drive that leads to the house is lined with impressive mature trees, two ponds and a fountain. As selling agent Eduardo Umanksy says "The House has unparalleled luxury, privacy and grounds to roam." And if US$195 million is just out of reach, there is the option to exclude a separate seven-bedroom house on the estate and knock $20 million off the price. 005_beverlyhouse_005_low 006_beverlyhouse_006_low 007_beverlyhouse_007_low 008_beverlyhouse_008_low 009_beverlyhouse_009_low 010_beverlyhouse_010_low 011_beverlyhouse_011_low
