Pacific Bondi: Right time, right place, right retail

It's easy to forget that until a few years ago Bondi's beach was just about all the suburb had going on. With limited restaurants and shopping, and a beachfront strip filled with tacky souvenirs, convenience stores and backpacker hostels, there was little reason to visit outside the summer swell. The transformation of Bondi over the past ten years from grubby to glamorous has been a gradual process, marked by a handful of large landmark projects. A key player in the new Bondi is Pacific. The sleek residential and retail precinct, also home to QT Hotel, sits on the site of the old Swiss Grand Hotel. With its multi-million dollar penthouses, on trend boutiques and gourmet food shops Pacific Bondi is now such an integral part of the local scene it feels like it was always there. pacific-bondi-2 Capit.el Group principal Eduard Litver, one of driving forces behind the development, says this was the intention. "We were privileged to acquire such an iconic and significant beachfront site and have completely transformed the landscape of Campbell Parade," says Mr Litver. "We created something that's authentic and unique and really lifted the standard on the strip." pacific-bondi-3 Recently named Mixed Use Development of the Year by the Property Council of Australia, Pacific houses a select group of retailers including Macelleria, Anita Gelato, Lululemon Athletica, Saturday Surf NYC, Scoop Wholefoods, Face Plus MediSpa, Bondi Botanic with Australia's first Speedo Aquatic Fitness Centre and Fishbowl. Joining them later this year is Bondi Public Bar, a new casual dining venture by chef Maurice Terzini of Icebergs Dining Room fame. A precinct of boutique fashion brands, adjoining to Lululemon is to be announced shortly. pacific-bondi-1 With a few retail spots still left to fill, Mr Litver says he is prepared to wait for the right brands and cultural fit. "We have set a high standard to create a truly authentic and unique retail precinct, and are patient and selective to ensure the right tenancy mix," he admits. "A few spaces remain for the right retail operator to be part of the best beachside retail destination, which is very much tailored to Bondi residents. "Despite Pacific holding some of the highest priced apartments in Australia, residents aren't looking for pretentious and formal shops and restaurants. We're creating a vibrant focal point for the local community and visitors alike."   Julia Hughes
