By Micah Lane In early September of this year the world's most luxurious yachting brands (and their loyal legions of fans) flocked to Cannes on the French Riviera, for the annual Yachting Festival. As I have done for the past 5 years, I attended on behalf of my Australian brokerage, Vicsail Sydney. Here's a glimpse into the world's most prestigious yachting gathering. The Cannes Yachting Festival is exactly that - a festival that celebrates the world's finest sailing yachts, motor boats, and luxury yachting and lifestyle accessories. Held in the heart of downtown Cannes, there are over 550 boats on display over two marinas, "Le Vieux Port" and "The Port Pierre Canto", with many of the yachts on display being brand new models, or world premiere displays. Whether you work in the industry like me, or just have a general appreciation for beautiful boats, this show never fails to impress. You can go on a virtual tour of the 2015 exhibition here: http://sisso.fr/cyf2015/#/accueil/ It's hard to discount the inimitable city of Cannes as lending a certain je ne sais quoi to the event - it is a city that celebrates luxury and glamorous marine living like no other. Whether you are strolling the cobbled, winding alleyways that connect the tiny streets, sipping a glass of wine opposite the harbour, dining on their fabulous French cuisine, or perhaps exploring the high-end nightlife; Cannes is the epitome of French cool. The setup of the actual show is very easy to navigate. Once you've entered the floating pavilion, each brand will have an elaborate setup backing onto one or two of their finest new boats. Unlike the more casual boat shows, such as the Sydney or Gold Coast gatherings, you must make a reservation to see the boats prior to boarding. This is serious business, people - sticky beaks aren't necessarily banned, but they are often discouraged! As a broker, I usually spend my time at the Cannes show strolling through the displays and bringing myself up-to-date on the latest offerings from the various brands. To the untrained eye, yachts - sailing or motor - have remained fairly unchanged in style over the years, but as someone who has sailed since the age of 8, I can assure you the trends shift dramatically season to season. The Cannes festival is also a great chance to touch base with my reps from the brands we sell back in Sydney. Ask me what the standout boat was for the 2015 show and I won't take long to answer: it's got to be the Swan 90S Solleone. Belonging to Nautor Swan owner and director Leonardo Ferragamo (son of fashion giant Salvatore), this 90 foot glamour never ceases to take my breath away with its master craftsmanship and epic performance thanks to it's state-of-the-art carbon fibre build and stunning interior. The good news is that it's currently for sale, too, as Leonardo has upgraded to the new Swan 115S. (If you're interested, we represent Swan, and would love to hear from you.) Other honourable mentions go to CNB's Bordeaux 60 and 76, as well as the Amel 55 and Amel 64 displays, and the entire Beneteau range - which we are proud to represent here in Australia. 2015 was really a standout show with lots of great toys on display, too - a yacht with army tank wheels? Yes please... Hot, humid, and bluebird skies; the days at the festival were spent wandering around from stall to stall and scoping out what I believe could work for our specific Australian market. Once the sun goes down, however, it's time to hit the famous Cannes restaurants for some of their world-class food and wine, and (much to the chagrin of my girlfriend) more boat talk. It's a wonderfully relaxed opportunity to meet with some of my favourite clients who have sailed to the French Riviera for the show, and are potentially looking to upgrade. If you are interested in exploring the world of yachting a little more, let's talk. At Vicsail Sydney we sell everything from a second Beneteau First 20 to a brand new, custom-order Swan 115s, and cater for sailors who are both new and experienced. Who knows, maybe it will be you travelling to Cannes next year, too!
